The Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary

The Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary spreads across 7,000 square miles of ocean off the Central California Coast.

StoryCats Challenge: tell the rich stories of the proposed Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary and move people write in to show their support for the Sanctuary. The content was crafted to capture the imagination, build support, move the project ahead by engaging viewers and providing informative insights into the project.

To begin the process, we determined our goals and strategized on how to accomplish them.

The media strategy we designed and executed placed targeted content on NPR, CBS News, multiple web-based publications. Success came with videos designed to guide people through the Public Comment process and ended with one of the highest ever number of public comments for a sanctuary.

StoryCats result: The Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary was signed into existence on November 30, 2024 and is affording protection to the shorelines and creatures that call the Central California Coast home.
